Workers need unions because It's 2023 and I can still see a post like this and involuntarily scream "What do you MEAN they didn't have air conditioning?!" out loud
i was thinking about that post comparing Jessica Rabbit as an asexual to Barbie and an asexual and then i thought of the Neil Gaiman post (was it a post?) about Crowley and Aziraphale being asexual and then this happened.

We live in a dystopia....
If the background actors don't come in for work because they exist virtually then the background costume and background hair and make up and their catering and transport and all the other departments that look after them get cut too. These things have knock on effects...
As an ager/dyer, 90% of my work was BG costumes. Especially on a show like Fear the Walking Dead, where costumes require a LOT of work. These kinds of shows are also very likely to be some of the first to turn to AI because the faces and motions of background zombies don’t have to look nearly as lifelike or consistent as normal humans.
As a relatively newcomer to the field, this is kind of the only work I’m getting right now while I build up a network of people I work with and a name for myself. We brought in so many people to the field and the union via needing more hands on background costumes.
I cannot overstate how much this will damage not only current, but future film workers in all departments.To join the union, you need working days. To reduce available working days to new workers is killing the union by denying it new hands.
